Contraception Q & A

What types of birth control are available?

Complete Healthcare for Women offers a full array of contraceptive measures. Barrier options, such as the diaphragm, as well as implants, such as the IUD, are commonly sought. Dr. Lorenzo can provide the IUD placement in his office. He’ll compassionately help you determine which options are most appropriate for your needs. And, if you prefer to use fertility awareness, he can help you learn more about your body and how to recognize your most fertile times.

What is Nexplanon®?

Nexplanon is a long-term birth control option that offers up to 3 years of protection. It’s a small and flexible implant, fitting just under the skin of the upper arm. Dr. Lorenzo can insert in his office and remove it at any time before the 3 years if you decide you want to get pregnant. If you want to continue the birth control after 3 years, you’ll just have another Nexplanon implant placed under your skin.

What type of Intrauterine Devices (IUD's) do we offer?

Mirena® is a hormonal IUD, that can be used for long-term birth control and heavy menstrual bleeding. The Mirena is a T-shaped device that contains Levonorgestrel, a type of hormone that prevents pregnancy. This form of birth control is more than 99% effective for up to 5 years.

ParaGard® is a 100% hormone-free IUD, that can provide long term birth control. This T- shaped device prevents pregnancy through its active ingredient copper. This form of birth control is more than 99% effective for up to 10 years.

What about the Depo shot?

The Depo-Provera shot is a valid birth control option. You receive the shot, in office, in your upper arm or buttocks to provide protection for 12-14 weeks. It’s recommended you repeat shots every 12 weeks to be most protected from unplanned pregnancy.

The hormones in the shot are similar to progesterone. If used on schedule, it provides 99% protection against pregnancy. You don’t have to remember to take it every day and it starts to work almost immediately after your first injection. It may take you 3-4 months to get pregnant following your last injection should you decide to halt the use of the depo shot.

Can Dr. Lorenzo prescribe the pill?

Dr. Lorenzo can prescribe the birth control pill, which is one of many birth control methods that alters your hormones to protect against pregnancy. Basically, you’re halted from ovulating, so there’s no egg to fertilize during sexual intercourse. It also changes the texture of your vaginal mucus so it’s hard for sperm to travel through your cervix, and it alters the lining of your uterus so implantation isn’t easy.

The pill is simple — you just take it daily — and it’s easily reversible. Just stop taking the pill when you’re ready to start your family or have your next child.
